MULTIPLICATION BY HEART

INCREASE MATH FLUENCY IN 5 MINUTES!



While down a research rabbit hole for some more fun interactive online games to increase math fluency, I came across a website called MATHIGON. During my exploration of the site, I found the lovely game called Multiplication by Heart.. Anyone from the “old” days knows that to be the phrase when told or asked about the knowledge of your multiplication facts. “ I know my multiplication by heart, or Do you know your multiplication facts by Heart? So immediately, I made an emotional connection with the game. The next steps were to assess:

  • How the game is played (the objective)

  • What concepts, skills, and/or procedural knowledge are needed to play the game?

  • Is it fun and engaging?

  • Is it challenging?

  • Does it have levels?

  • Is it solo, partner, or team playable?

  • Will the students I'm currently serving enjoy playing as well as benefit academically from the consistent play of the game

  • Can the game be on Zoom or another remote learning platform such as Google Meets, etc.?

  • Is the game free, and if not how much is the cost?

  • Is the game a trial version, and if so, how long is the trial?

  • If the game is a trial version, how long is the trial, and how much is the cost of the game once the trial is over?

  • If a paid version or membership is necessary for long-term play, what is the time period for the paid version?. 1 year, 6 months, etc.?

Once I discovered that the game met all of my main criteria to add to my resource repertoire:

  • Free

  • High Fun potential

  • Easy to use

  • Builds students skill, concept, procedural capacity

  • Builds students fluency


I dropped it in the Learning Management Systems (Schoology and Google Classroom) as a Math Fluency Resource Material.






I also added it to my STUDENT ASYNCHRONOUS TRAIL GUIDE for students to easily access our main platforms, as well as online learning and enrichment resources that we are using fairly quickly.








In this video, she helps students and teachers take action towards a dream where the reality has the majority of students mastering their multiplication facts to automaticity, or by heart.


If this can be done by the beginning of 3rd grade, that would boost the math fluency of a student dramatically. Struggling in the 5th grade and above to perform procedures that would be much easier and less time-consuming if automaticity of multiplication facts was a reality, can be detrimental to the SEL, Social Emotional Learning of students, as well as the achievement of academic success in math


The Students really enjoyed the game. Exhilaration and Engagement increased. Accuracy during Mental Math Number Talks focused on fractions increased as well. The best part is hearing students celebrate themselves and their classmates at the end of the game. Making the distance learning environment fun and engaging is challenging, but games such as Multiplication by Heart.. make it a little easier, as well as some semblance of fun classroom times.




Not only can this be played remotely, but this can also be played in the brick-n-mortar classroom. Teachers can display the game on the whiteboard, wall, or etc to play the whole class. If students have access to computers (mobile cart or via a computer lab) at the school site, they may play during enrichment time or as a May Do activity.


Math should be fun for both the teacher and the student.
